It also confirmed the location of naval freight ship SS Iron Crown off the coast of Victoria, 77 years after it was sunk during World War II by a Japanese submarine. The ships state-of-the-art technology also allows maritime archaeologists and historians to find long-lost ship wrecks like the Blythe Star in May this year, which was sitting at the bottom of the ocean off Tasmania's south-west coast - not seen since it sunk in 1973. The ship has reached an important milestone, having just embarked on 100 voyages since 2014.ĭuring that time around 265,000 marine life records have been collected through scientific surveys, and of those, around 1,000 are thought to be new species. The ship is currently on a 16-day voyage conducting new science projects, including installing and using new specialised sensors for plankton studies.īlind cusk eels, zombie worms and carnivorous sponges are some of the species that have been discovered by scientists onboard the CSIRO research vessel RV Investigator.The Investigator has also mapped 3 million square kilometres of ocean floor - the equivalent to a country the size of India or half of Australia. ![]()
